Derek Robinson came to Concordia as a freshman in 1998 and joined the Iota Psi Colony along with his roommate, Josh Rieker. He became the historian of the Colony and the next year, Iota Psi Colony became Psi Chapter and Derek became the Vice President of the newly chartered Chapter. Derek was President of Psi Chapter his junior and senior years and was the first Psi Chapter member to serve as President for more than one year. Derek has served the New York Alumni Chapter as both a Director and the Vice President.

Derek graduated from Concordia in 2002 with a B.A. in History and also has earned a M.A. in History from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 2005. He served as a substitute teacher in various Buffalo-area school districts until 2008, when he started teaching 5th through 8th grade history and 5th and 6th grade religion at St. Matthew Lutheran School in North Tonawanda, New York. He also coaches the girls' basketball team, who placed second in the Western New York Lutheran Schools Basketball Tournament in 2009.
